Schnauzer InformationSchnauzer HistoryThe Miniature Schnauzer breed was first seen in Germany and is the only breed in the terrier group to not have British roots. The breed resulted from a series of experiments during the 19th century. The Schnauzer was first known as the Pinscher, and then later was known as Schnauzer. The name comes from the German word schnauzer which means snout. The Miniatures were most likely developed by crossing the Affenpincher with the original Schnauzer. There seem to have been many crosses with many different types of dog breeds to gain the right measurements for the mini-schnauzer. The Miniature Schnauzer was recognized in 1933 when The American Miniature Schnauzer Club became official. Miniature Schnauzers' AppearanceThe Mini-Schnauzer is a small dog with a long head and squarely proportioned frame. The Mini Schnauzer is very similar to that of the standard Schnauzer. The breed is known for its thick eyebrows and long mustache. The tail is docked and the eyes are an oval shape. They carry a very strong muzzle and v shaped ears that carry forward. The Miniature Schnauzer has a coat that can vary in color. Coat colors include black, white, silver, and the most popular salt and pepper. Miniature Schnauzer's TemperamentThe Mini-Schnauzer is a loving and very intelligent breed. They are super outgoing, very perky and playful. They love children and are generally a very happy breed. They need the companionship of humans and are very obedient. This breed is known for its fairly aggressive ways with other dogs. This can be avoided if early socialization is implemented. In all, the Mini Schnauzer makes for a wonderful companion. They can tend to bark a lot but the Schnauzer's bark is not as annoying as one might think. The bark is a low toned bark that sounds like talking. They can be used as guard dogs if needed and will make wonderful rodent catchers! Mini Schnauzer's RoleThe role of the Miniature Schnauzer is that of the best friend. This dog is great for an individual who is looking for a friend and someone to love. This breed is known to be loyal and kind yet protective and spunky at times. The breed will fair well with children as well and would need to be properly socialized if other dogs are in the household. |
